If you have ever ordered the creation of a website or application, you have almost certainly come across WordPress. It was created in 2003 as a simple blogging platform and has evolved over the years into a tool that is said to know "everything". Everything from an online store to a booking system can be built by adding plugins and themes.
But here lies the biggest problem. The fact that there is something maybe to build, does not mean that it is also correctly or optimally. At Deltok, we do not use WordPress for serious projects and applications. So let's see why.
Fundamental problems and limitations
1. Security and vulnerabilities
Because WordPress is so widespread (powering more than 40% of all websites), it is a prime target for hackers and malicious scripts. Its ecosystem of plugins and themes, mostly developed by third parties (often also amateurs), represents a huge security risk. An outdated and unmaintained plugin is like an open door to your database.
2. Speed and performance (Performance)
WordPress is notorious for making huge (often unnecessary) database queries every time a page is visited. The code under the hood is old and cumbersome with all possible backward compatibility functionality. The result? Slow loading, which Google punishes with lower rankings (bad SEO), and users with leaving the page.
3. "Frankenstein" architecture (Dependence on plugins)
Do you want SEO? Install the plugin. Want to speed up the page? Install the caching plugin. Want a contact form? Another plugin. Soon you have 30+ plugins on your site that were not designed to work together. Any update to the kernel itself may mean that it will any of these plugins stopped working and crashed the entire site in the process.
4. Impossible scaling and adjustments
Although many agencies use WordPress to build B2B or B2C platforms (with the help of WooCommerce or similar plugins), at the first major load or the need for specific business logic (which is not in the form of a plugin), the system breaks or requires enormous and expensive workarounds (hacks).
What is the alternative and how do we work?
Today, modern, fast and reliable web applications are not created by sliding elements and clicking through plugin settings. They are created with purpose-written solutions that are tailored exactly to your needs and are not burdened with ballast.
Modern technology fund
We use frameworks like React and Next.js and scalable databases. This allows us to build lightning-fast sites, modeled after the biggest web giants.
Full Control (Custom Code)
What we write works exactly as intended. There are no surprises, no hacks via old plugins and no dependency on programmers from the third side of the world.
But that doesn't mean you don't have control over the content. For cases where an input mask is required (e.g. blog posts, adding news), we use an appropriate simple, reliable, and secure Headless CMS, which does not interfere with the appearance and code of the application on the external (user) side.
